Wednesday, December 3rd in the season of Advent December 3, 2008

We cannot attempt to live intentionally without eventually confronting the demon of materialism that has so powerfully gripped western society, including many churches.  Richard Foster, a contemporary Quaker writer, helps us understand this:

“Because we lack a divine Centre our need for security has led us into an insane attachment to things.  We must clearly understand that the lust for affluence in contemporary society is psychotic….  The mass media has convinced us that to be out of step with fashion is to be out of step with reality.  It is time we awaken to the fact that conformity to a sick society is to be sick.”

Wait till that all changes with the changing of the seasons…we may still yet experience a lack of material things due to our apathy that has paved away in this culture for today. In that day of lack, spiritual things will come out to the front and it will harden us like warriors once again to see life the way it really is…
