“The first sin of a community is to turn its eyes from the One who called it to life, to look at itself instead. The second sin is to find itself beautiful and to believe itself to be a source of life.”
These qualifications of sin seem strange at first. But Jean Vanier, the founder of the L’Arche communities, sees that communal pride is a great temptation, all the more so when the community is insecure because of this or that. Let us repent of the ways in which we have constructed such a place, and ask God to humble us and make us a community which has its source in Him.
